Every time that we do an upgrade from a previous version to a new version, it is quite a painful process.
The database never updates cleanly without needing us to manually move files (i.e. database restore has never worked for us making it a manual process).
Additionally, we always seem to have to compile some modules by hand, because it doesn’t seem like you are set up using modern package management that could make this much easier.
So I am wondering when you are going to put some emphasis on making the upgrade process less painful. I believe that you have a great product, but our network/admin people who do the installs/upgrades don’t feel this way at all.
We can’t afford to keep having an upgrade take us one to two weeks to accomplish. I expect some issues with an open source version; but this one is much more difficult and seems to always take a lot of time to complete.
The upgrades should be much smoother than they are.
Just wondering if these same upgrade issues are going to persist in version 2.
Let me re-iterate. You are using a software product for free that would cost you way over $50k, and you complain about the upgrade process?
Not only that, the update process DOES NOT require any compilation of any module or any “dev work”. If this is something, you need to do on your machine than it is rather something with your configuration than with Razuna.
I’m managing over 250 servers for our customers and upgrading from, for example, version 1.7 to 1.9.x, takes about 10 minutes. Not only does the database update flawlessly but also everything just works.
I know of about 100 other customers with a self-hosted edition, that do not have those issues as you describe.
As your network/admin people are having issues, you should maybe consider getting a support subscription from us? Then we will take care of the upgrade for you, and you will support the product for future development. The investment into a support subscription is easily being paid off with any future upgrade.
Well, the update process isn’t that great at all. There are a lot of “best practices” regarding updating/upgrading in open source community you don’t obey.
Yes, Razuna is woth a lot, maybe $50k. However, for a $50k product I’d like to see a simple auto-update possibility, like other open source projects (just name Wordpress, Joomla, whatever). One click - updated. Easy!
Instead of having an (additional/optional) update-package which only contains the changes, we - the users/admins - have to download the whole server package (incl. tomcat, configs etc) each time and then update manually. The wiki pages are somewhat outdated or incomplete in some places, using mysql will cause additional issues (which can be resolved!) etcpp.
The more a Razuna installation is customized (e.g. custom fields or API changes) the longer we need for the upgrade. It’s not meant as a a comlain, it’s a fact.
So, I’d like to see an optimized update functionality for R2.
